How do you recognise inflamed gums?

Healthy gums are pale pink and firm. With inflammation (technically gingivitis) they change noticeably:

  • Red instead of pale pink and often swollen
  • Bleeds easily — for example when brushing
  • Sensitive to pain or pressure
  • Sometimes accompanied by bad breath

The most common causes

By far the most common cause is bacterial plaque at the gum line. The gums react with inflammation. Contributing factors are:

  • Insufficient or incorrect oral hygiene and tartar
  • Hormonal changes (e.g. during pregnancy)
  • Smoking and stress
  • Certain medications
Gingivitis is reversible — periodontitis is not

If the inflammation remains untreated, it can spread to the tooth-supporting structures and break down bone — this damage is no longer reversible. So: act early. More about the periodontitis treatment.

What helps against inflamed gums?

  • Thorough, gentle hygieneBrush twice a day — including at the gum line — and clean the interdental spaces daily.
  • Professional teeth cleaningRemoves plaque and tartar where the brush can't reach (from CHF 190) — the gums often calm down quickly afterwards.
  • For advanced inflammationIf periodontitis has already developed, we treat it specifically — gently also with the laser (from CHF 160).

Caution with an abscess

If a painful, pus-filled swelling (abscess) forms on the gum — possibly with fever or facial swelling — do not wait. This needs to be assessed urgently. In an emergency you can reach us at +41 44 363 90 90.

How to keep your gums healthy and strong

  • Brush thoroughly twice a day — soft brush, deliberately at the gum line
  • Clean the interdental spaces daily (floss or interdental brushes)
  • Go for a professional cleaning once or twice a year
  • Don't smoke and pay attention to a balanced, vitamin-rich diet

Are your gums red, swollen or painful? Have it checked early — the earlier, the easier. You can find more about the treatment of inflamed gums on the treatment page, or arrange an appointment at our practice at Löwenplatz in Zurich.
