Blood on the toothbrush? That is a signal you should not ignore. We explain the causes — and what helps.

Why do gums bleed?

The most common cause is gum inflammation (gingivitis): if plaque builds up at the gum line, the tissue reacts with inflammation — it becomes red, swells and bleeds easily, for example when brushing. Less often, hormonal changes, medication or a toothbrush that is too hard are behind it.

Harmless or serious?

Gingivitis (reversible)

Pure gum inflammation is reversible: with good oral hygiene and a professional cleaning, the gums usually calm down within days to weeks.

Periodontitis (permanent)

If the inflammation remains untreated, it can spread to the tooth-supporting structures. This bone loss is no longer reversible — untreated, loose teeth and tooth loss can result.

Take these warning signs seriously

 • Gums bleed regularly when brushing or eating
 • Receding gums — the teeth look 'longer'
 • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
 • Loose teeth or a changed bite

What helps?

With pure gingivitis, thorough oral hygiene and a professional cleaning are often enough. If periodontitis has already developed, we treat it specifically — gently and tissue-sparing also with the laser, which barely bleeds and supports healing. The earlier, the better the prognosis.
