What is behind sensitive teeth?

Sensitive teeth show up as a brief, pulling pain — with cold, hot, sweet or sour things, sometimes even when brushing. The reason: the dentine (the layer beneath the enamel) is exposed. It has fine tubules that transmit stimuli directly to the tooth nerve.

The most common causes

  • Exposed tooth necks due to receding gums
  • Worn enamel — from brushing too hard or grinding at night
  • Acid — acidic drinks, frequent snacking, reflux
  • Caries or leaking fillings
  • Temporarily after a bleaching or a teeth cleaning
Sensitivity is a signal

If the symptoms persist or are severe and localised, the cause should be clarified — caries can also be behind it. More on this in the article toothache: causes & what helps.

What helps?

  • Brush gentlyA soft toothbrush and light pressure — vigorous scrubbing wears away enamel and gums.
  • Special toothpasteToothpaste for sensitive teeth with fluoride seals the fine tubules and hardens the enamel.
  • Reduce acidFewer acidic drinks — and don't brush right after something acidic, rinse with water and wait a moment.
  • At the dentistProfessional fluoridation or sealing, and above all: treat the cause (receding gums, grinding, caries).

If grinding is behind it, a grinding splint helps; with receding gums we clarify the cause. As part of our dental hygiene (from CHF 190) we specifically fluoridate sensitive teeth. Arrange an appointment at our practice at Löwenplatz in Zurich.
