If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, the chances of re-implantation are best if it reaches the dentist within about 30 to 60 minutes and correctly stored. Stay calm — and follow the steps below.
First aid step by step
- Touch the tooth only by the crown, never by the root
- Do not scrub, do not disinfect, do not dry — the fine cells on the root must stay alive
- Store the tooth moist: ideally in a tooth rescue box, otherwise in UHT milk or your own saliva (cheek) — never in water and never dry
- Go to the dentist or emergency service immediately — the faster, the better the prognosis
A tooth rescue box from the pharmacy keeps the root cells alive the longest. For families and sports clubs, a small, sensible addition to the first-aid kit.
Milk tooth or permanent tooth?
A knocked-out milk tooth is usually not re-implanted, so as not to endanger the underlying tooth germ — but the injury should always be checked. A permanent tooth, on the other hand, is saved if possible.
Who pays for a dental accident?
