A child's first dental visit: from when and how?

When should a child go to the dentist for the first time? And how does the appointment stay relaxed? The most important answers for parents.

From when for the first time?

As a guideline: with the first milk tooth, at the latest around the first birthday. These early appointments are less about major treatment and more about getting to know each other — the child gets used to the practice, sounds and chair, and we can keep an eye on healthy development early.

Why milk teeth matter

Milk teeth are not 'disposable teeth'. They are important for chewing, for learning to speak and as placeholders for the permanent teeth. Untreated caries on milk teeth can cause pain and affect the following teeth — which is why they too should be cared for and checked.

How to keep the appointment relaxed

 • Start early — those who know the practice are less afraid
 • Speak about it positively, avoid scary words ('injection', 'hurt')
 • Deliberately keep the first appointment low-threshold — room to explore instead of pressure
 • Lead by good example — brushing teeth together at home
Early check of tooth alignment

As the child grows, a look at the jaw and tooth alignment is also worthwhile. When orthodontic early treatment makes sense is explained in the linked article — more on this also on our page orthodontics for children.

Would you like to get your child used to the dentist in a relaxed atmosphere? Arrange an easy getting-to-know-you appointment at our practice at Löwenplatz in Zurich. We also take our time for anxious children (and adults) — see overcoming dental anxiety.
