Dental anxiety is normal — and nothing to be ashamed of
The sound of the drill, the feeling of losing control in the chair, a bad childhood experience — dental anxiety has many faces, and it is widespread. Some just get nervous, others avoid the visit for years. The problem: small issues grow into big ones over time, and the fear of the next appointment grows with them.
If you are looking for a dentist for anxious patients, one thing matters: you never have to justify your fear. With us, you are welcome to voice it — and we adapt to it.
What anxious patients really need
From many conversations we know: it is rarely just about pain. It is about control, understanding and no surprises. We build every appointment on this:
- Time instead of rush: we deliberately schedule more time for anxious patients — nobody gets rushed through
- Explaining before anything happens: every step is announced. You always know what comes next
- You stay in control: a hand signal is enough — and we pause. Any time, no questions asked
- Honesty: we tell you what is necessary and what can wait — without pressure and without treatments you do not want
- Small steps: the first appointment can simply be a getting-to-know. Treatment only starts when you are ready
A practice that does not look like a dentist's
Fear often starts at the door: harsh neon light, sterile white, the typical smell. That is exactly what we did not want. Our practice on Löwenstrasse is kept in earthy, warm colours — beige and rosé tones, exposed concrete, wood and plenty of greenery. Daylight falls through large windows, the rooms are calm and uncluttered. No operating-theatre feel, but a place where you can take a breath first.
This is not a coincidence but a concept: the environment is meant to calm your nervous system before anyone even looks into your mouth. Many patients tell us on their first visit: “This doesn't feel like a dentist's at all.” That is exactly the goal.
Minimally invasive: as little intervention as possible
A large part of the fear concerns the procedure itself — drilling, cutting, grinding. That is why, wherever it makes clinical sense, we rely on minimally invasive methods that preserve healthy tooth substance and keep the intervention as small as possible:
- Gentle cleaning with EMS Airflow® One: deposits are removed with a fine powder-water jet instead of scraping — noticeably more comfortable, even with sensitive teeth. More about dental hygiene
- Laser instead of scalpel: for gum inflammation and periodontitis we work with the laser — gentle, without an incision
- Aesthetics without grinding: Non-Prep Veneers and composite bonding enhance front teeth in many cases entirely without removing tooth substance
- Aligners instead of fixed braces: tooth correction with removable, clear trays — no wires, no brackets. More about aligners
- Low-level laser therapy: for jaw pain and tension we use gentle laser light — painless and without medication. More about laser therapy
The smaller the intervention, the shorter the appointment, the less anaesthesia, the faster the recovery — and the easier the next visit becomes. For anxious patients, minimally invasive is not a luxury but the foundation.
Red light therapy: ten minutes of calm in the treatment chair
New at our practice — and a gift especially for nervous patients: red light therapy. You lie relaxed for ten minutes under an LED mask with warm red light. Eyes closed, breathing deeply, feeling the warmth. If you wish already during your dental cleaning, or as a gentle wind-down after your treatment — so you leave the practice calmer than you arrived.
In 2026, red light therapy is our gift in combination with a treatment — just mention it at your appointment. You can read what is behind it in our article Red light at the dentist.
How your first appointment as an anxious patient works
- Tell usWhen booking, mention that you are afraid of the dentist. We then deliberately schedule more time and prepare accordingly.
- Arrive without pressureThe first appointment is a conversation, not a procedure. You get to know the practice and the team — calmly, in the reception area or in the treatment room, as you prefer.
- A look — only if you wantWhen you are ready, we take a careful look at your teeth. You set the pace, and every step is explained beforehand.
- Your plan, your rhythmTogether we determine what is really necessary and in which order — in small, manageable steps. With a hand signal as a pause button during every treatment.
