Dental anxiety is widespread — and nothing to be ashamed of. We explain how we deal with it.

You are not alone

A considerable part of the population feels uneasy before a dental visit — some so strongly that they avoid appointments for years. The tricky part: those who avoid often need more treatment later, which intensifies the anxiety further. Breaking this cycle is possible — with the right approach.

Our approach

  • Listening firstBefore we treat, we talk. What exactly triggers the anxiety? Past experiences, loss of control, pain, sounds? That makes a difference.
  • A pace you setAn agreed stop signal, breaks on request, nothing is rushed. You stay in control.
  • Explaining before we actNo “surprise moment”. We say what comes next — uncertainty intensifies anxiety, clarity reduces it.
  • In small stepsWith strong anxiety we deliberately start at a low threshold — sometimes the first appointment is just a getting-to-know-you without any treatment.
Trust cannot be prescribed. It arises when people sense that they are taken seriously and that nothing happens against their will.

What you can do yourself

  • Schedule the appointment for the morning — less time to “work yourself up”
  • Bring a companion if that is reassuring
  • Mention the anxiety in advance — by phone or email, not only once in the chair
  • Headphones with music are welcome
The first step

You don’t have to be “ready” for treatment in order to make an appointment. A conversation is enough as a start — everything else is your decision.

Our conclusion

Dental anxiety is treatable — not with a trick, but with time, respect and transparency. That is exactly what we make room for.

This article is for general information only and does not replace individual dental advice. Whether and which treatment is right for you is something we determine in a personal consultation based on your individual situation.
