When is teeth correction in children useful?
In children, teeth correction often begins as an early treatment — usually between 4 and 9 years. The aim is to recognise and correct misdevelopments of the jaw and teeth early, before they lead to bigger problems. Important: not every correction has to wait until all permanent teeth are present.
Why treat early? Using jaw growth
Because the jaw is still developing in childhood, growth can be guided deliberately and space created for the permanent teeth. This often reduces or completely avoids more extensive treatment in adolescence or adulthood.
Which misalignments are treated in children?
In children, jaw and bite misalignments are particularly relevant:
- Crossbite — should be treated early, as it can affect jaw growth (read more)
- Crowding — too little space for the permanent teeth (read more)
- Overbite and open bite — the latter is often linked to habits such as thumb-sucking in children (read more)
Treatment with a clear aligner — child-friendly
The early treatment is carried out with a special, clear brace. It gently guides jaw growth and is removable — comfortable in everyday school life and during sport, and easy to clean. The treatment usually lasts 6 to 12 months.
Does insurance cover the costs?
For children, orthodontic treatments are often contributed to with a medical indication (health insurance or IV); supplementary dental insurance covers 50–75 % depending on the policy. We assess the cost coverage individually and support you with the submission. Details in the article braces for children — what insurance covers.
