Does insurance pay for children's braces?

The short answer: often yes — at least in part. While basic insurance (KVG) usually classifies orthodontic treatment in adults as aesthetic and does not cover it, the situation for children is different. With a medical indication, treatments are often contributed to — via health insurance or IV. On top of that, supplementary dental insurance covers a large part, depending on the policy.

Basic insurance, supplementary insurance, IV — who pays what?

In Switzerland, several sources often work together for children:

  • Basic insurance (KVG): generally does not cover braces — exception: severe, medically indicated cases.
  • Supplementary dental insurance: covers 50–75 % of costs depending on the policy. Often the most important pillar for children.
  • IV (disability insurance): covers part or all of the costs for certain congenital conditions or medical indications.
The key point for children

With a medical indication, orthodontic treatments are often contributed to (health insurance or IV). Whether this applies to your child depends on the specific diagnosis — which we assess individually.

When is treatment medically necessary?

Not every brace is cosmetic. Pronounced misalignments can affect chewing, speech, breathing or the jaw joints — and such functional problems are often the reason for a contribution to the costs. Whether your child has a medical indication is something we assess in the preliminary examination.

The right time: early treatment (usually 4–9 years)

For children, an early treatment is often worthwhile — usually between 4 and 9 years. With a special, clear brace we gently guide jaw growth in the right direction and create space for the permanent teeth. This often reduces or avoids more extensive treatment later. Early treatment usually takes 6–12 months. Read more on our orthodontics for children page and in the article on the right time.
