Removing tooth discolouration: which method helps when.

Cleaning, bleaching or veneers? Which method removes tooth discolouration depends on where it comes from. An overview.

Two types of discolouration

Discolouration develops in two ways — and that determines which treatment helps.

External discolouration

Sit on the enamel — from coffee, tea, red wine, nicotine and deposits. Can usually be removed by professional cleaning and polishing.

Internal discolouration

Sit within the tooth itself — due to age, certain medications, a dead tooth or too much fluoride. Cannot be brushed away — here bleaching or veneers/bonding help.

Which method helps when?

  • Professional teeth cleaningFrom CHF 190 — removes deposits and external discolouration and makes the teeth look brighter again. More: dental hygiene.
  • BleachingFrom CHF 440 — genuinely brightens deeper, yellowish discolouration too. More: teeth whitening.
  • Veneers or bondingFor stubborn, structural discolouration that cannot be bleached — veneers or composite bonding cover it permanently.
