Red light therapy: effects, process and what research says.

From skincare trends to sports medicine: red light is everywhere. We soberly explain what is behind it — and why you can currently experience it free with your treatment at our practice.

What is red light therapy?

In red light therapy, low-energy red and near-infrared light (typically in the range of around 630 to 850 nanometres) acts on the skin. Modern devices use LEDs — for example as a panel or as an LED face mask, as we use at our practice. The light contains no UV, does not tan and merely feels like gentle warmth.

In the scientific literature, the principle is known as photobiomodulation — light that modulates biological processes in cells. Related to this is low-level laser therapy, which we have long used in pain therapy: the same principle, a different light source.

How does red light affect cells?

Put simply: red and near-infrared light penetrates a few millimetres into the skin, where it is absorbed by the mitochondria — the “power plants” of the cells. Studies suggest that this stimulates the cells to produce more energy (ATP). Stimulated circulation and a modulated inflammatory response have also been described.

On this basis, red light is used and researched in various areas today:

  • Skin & aesthetics: supporting collagen production and skin appearance — more in our article More beautiful skin with red light?
  • Relaxation & well-being: the gentle warmth has a calming effect — many experience the application as a little time-out
  • Recovery: sports and wound medicine are investigating whether red light can support the recovery of muscles and tissue
  • Dentistry: photobiomodulation is being researched, among other things, to provide support after procedures
What red light is not

Red light therapy is not a solarium (no UV), not an old-school heat lamp and not a substitute for medical treatment. At our practice it is a well-being application that complements your dental treatment.

What does the research say?

The state of research is promising but not conclusive. Effects on skin appearance are the best studied: controlled studies describe an improvement in skin feel, complexion and fine lines after regular applications over several weeks. Important to know: many studies are small, and devices, doses and application times vary greatly. A single session does not produce a visible change — consistency is key.

How red light therapy works at House of Smiles

We use an LED face mask with red and near-infrared light — as a relaxing addition to your treatment. The application takes ten minutes and fits into your visit without an extra appointment: during or after your dental cleaning, or to wind down after a surgical procedure.

  • Book your appointment as usualDental cleaning, check-up with a procedure or your planned treatment — everything as usual.
  • Mention the red lightSimply say at your appointment that you would like to try the red light therapy — we will schedule the ten minutes.
  • Lie back & enjoyClose your eyes, feel the warmth, breathe — afterwards you head home relaxed and without any restrictions.
Currently free with a treatment

In 2026, red light therapy is our gift in combination with a treatment — for example your dental cleaning. All details on the red light therapy page.
