The LED mask boom

LED face masks have gone from niche gadget to a fixture in many skincare routines. The range extends from cheap no-name products to premium devices — with huge differences in price and quality. The basic idea is always the same: red and sometimes near-infrared LED light intended to support skin appearance and regeneration (we explain the basics in our article Red light therapy: effects and process).

What really matters in an LED mask

  • Wavelength: studies on skin effects mostly use red light around 630–660 nm and near-infrared around 810–850 nm — many cheap devices provide no information on this
  • Irradiance (dose): LEDs that are too weak achieve little — the dose determines whether an effect is even possible
  • Safety & eye protection: certified devices, properly finished LEDs and guidance on eye protection are a must
  • Consistency: in studies, effects only appear after weeks of consistent use — the most honest purchase criterion is whether you will stick with it

At home or at the practice?

LED mask at home vs. at our practice

At home

Flexible and as often as you like — ideal for a daily routine. In return: purchase costs, quality that is hard for lay people to judge, and the mask actually has to be used.

At House of Smiles

A professional device, no purchase, integrated into your appointment — during or after your treatment. Currently free in combination with a treatment — ideal for getting to know red light first.

Our tip: try first, then invest

Before you invest several hundred francs in a home mask: experience the application first. At our practice you can currently try the LED mask for free with your dental cleaning or treatment — afterwards you will know whether red light is for you. Details on the red light therapy page.

By the way: we have honestly assessed what is realistically possible for skin and complexion in our article More beautiful skin with red light?.

This article is for general information only and does not replace individual dental advice. Whether and which treatment is right for you is something we determine in a personal consultation based on your individual situation.
