Gummy smile: when a lot of gum shows when you smile.

A gum-heavy smile is usually medically harmless, but is often perceived as bothersome. We explain the causes — and which dental options exist.

What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is when a wide band of gum becomes visible above the upper front teeth when smiling. In most cases this is not a medical problem — but many people find it bothersome and wish for a more harmonious smile.

Where does a gummy smile come from?

There is no single cause. Often several factors play together:

  • Gum line — if the gum covers a lot of tooth, the teeth look shorter and the proportion of gum appears larger.
  • Tooth length and position — short or unevenly positioned front teeth reinforce the impression.
  • Jaw and bone shape — the growth of the upper jaw can also play a role.
  • Lip movement — how far the upper lip lifts when smiling differs from person to person.
The cause determines the solution

That is exactly why every sensible treatment starts with an honest analysis: a gummy smile caused by the gum line is approached differently from one that goes back to tooth position or jaw structure.

Gum correction with the laser

If the cause lies in the gum line — that is, too much or unevenly distributed gum — the shape can be harmonised with a gum correction (gingivectomy). With the laser we work particularly gently:

  • Hardly any bleeding, as the laser seals the tissue while cutting
  • Usually without sutures and with faster healing
  • Less pain than with the classic scalpel method
  • The result is permanent — no top-up needed

When the gum line is not the cause

If the gummy smile goes back to tooth position, an orthodontic correction with aligners can align the front teeth more harmoniously. If short or worn front teeth are the reason, veneers or composite bonding are options. For pronounced bone-related forms, an oral surgery assessment is the right path — here we refer you specifically.
