Correcting an overbite — causes, consequences & treatment

An overbite is one of the most common misalignments — and more than just an aesthetic issue. We show what's behind it, what consequences it can have and how it can be corrected gently today.

What is an overbite?

With an overbite, the upper incisors sit too far in front of the lower ones — the horizontal gap between the upper and lower rows of teeth is enlarged. A slight overbite is normal; it only becomes a problem when the gap is clearly too large.

Overbite or deep bite? The difference

Colloquially, everything is often called an “overbite” — technically there are two forms: with an overbite, the horizontal gap is enlarged (the upper teeth protrude). With a deep bite, the upper incisors cover the lower ones too much vertically when biting down. Which form is present is something we assess in the preliminary examination.

What consequences can an overbite have?

A pronounced overbite is not only an aesthetic issue — it can have functional effects:

  • Increased risk of front-tooth trauma — protruding teeth are more exposed during falls or impacts.
  • Speech changes — the bite position can affect speech.
  • Aesthetic effects on the smile and the profile.
  • With a deep bite additionally: greater wear of the front teeth and possible jaw joint complaints over time.

How is an overbite corrected?

In many cases an overbite can now be corrected with clear aligners. The individually made trays move the teeth step by step into the correct position. For more pronounced malocclusions, additional aids such as elastics are used for bite correction. We plan the exact approach with AI support based on a 3D scan.

When should an overbite be treated?

In children and adolescents, jaw growth can often be used deliberately, which is why an early assessment makes sense (see orthodontics for children). But an overbite is also treatable in adults — teeth can be moved at any age.
