Why does the jaw hurt on only one side?

One-sided jaw or jaw joint pain is common. Usually there is one-sided overloading behind it: one side of the jaw joint or the chewing muscles is used more than the other. The cause is often the same as with bilateral complaints — just unevenly distributed.

Common causes of one-sided complaints

  • One-sided chewing — e.g. because the other side is sensitive; the chewing load shifts.
  • One-sided grinding or clenching — mainly loads one side (more on grinding).
  • Faulty bite / malocclusion that loads one side more.
  • Tension and posture — e.g. a preferred sleeping position on one side.

Jaw pain or jaw joint pain?

Is the pain more in the muscle (cheek, temple) or directly in the joint in front of the ear — e.g. with clicking when opening? Both can occur on one side and are often connected. A short examination provides the precise classification. More on causes and treatment in the article jaw joint pain — causes, symptoms & what helps.

When should one-sided jaw pain be assessed?

Occasional, brief complaints often disappear on their own. An assessment makes sense if the pain persists or recurs, comes with clicking, a restricted mouth opening or headaches and neck pain. Then we treat the cause specifically instead of just the symptoms.
