Tooth jewellery (tooth gems): pretty — but harmful to the tooth?

Tooth jewellery is a subtle eye-catcher. The most common question: does it harm the tooth? We clarify.

What is tooth jewellery?

Tooth jewellery is a small, shiny crystal or stone applied to the outside of a tooth — usually an upper incisor or canine. It is fixed without drilling, similar to a dental bonding, and creates a subtle sparkle when smiling.

Does it harm the tooth?

Applied professionally, tooth jewellery is gentle: the tooth is not ground down or injured, the natural substance is fully preserved. The jewellery can later be removed without residue. The only important thing is that the spot is kept clean — if plaque collects around it, that can attack the tooth over time. We advise against home glue kits from the internet.

Procedure & care

  • Painless and quick — done in a few minutes, without drilling
  • Lasts many months to years with good care
  • Normal oral hygiene is enough — brush carefully around the jewellery
  • At regular check-ups we also look at how it sits
