Why does the wisdom tooth hurt?
Wisdom tooth pain almost always has a specific cause. The most common:
- Eruption & inflammation — as the tooth breaks through, painful pockets and inflammation can form at the gum.
- Displacement / pressure — the tooth is at an angle and presses against the neighbouring tooth.
- Lack of space — there is too little room in the jaw and the tooth cannot erupt properly.
- Caries — the hard-to-reach wisdom tooth (or the neighbouring tooth) is decayed.
What helps with acute wisdom tooth pain?
Until your appointment, a gentle, thorough cleaning of the area, cooling compresses from the outside and — according to the package insert — a common painkiller can temporarily ease the discomfort. Important: these are only interim measures. Pain is a warning sign and rarely disappears permanently on its own if inflammation or a space problem is behind it.
When should you see the dentist?
Have the situation assessed if the pain persists or recurs — and quickly if the following signs appear:
- noticeable swelling of the cheek or gum
- inflammation, a bad taste or pus at the erupting tooth
- difficulty swallowing, restricted mouth opening or fever
Does the wisdom tooth then have to come out?
Not automatically. We decide based on the specific situation — not prophylactically without reason. For displaced teeth we take a 3D X-ray for a reliable assessment. When removal makes sense and what it costs is explained in the article removing wisdom teeth — when is it necessary? (consultation from CHF 150).
